Despite playing well in the first half, Ardeer collapsed in the second half and went down to a heavy 5-0 defeat away to Darvel. The game was officated by young referee Craig Napier and played in windy and wet conditions on a pitch that looked a bit more like a cow field than a football ground by half time.
The first half was relatively uneventful until approximately 30 minutes in. A Darvel striker had a one-on-one chance that was turned wide by Davie Richardson and they shot wide from the resulting corner after penalty box scramble. A couple of minutes afterwards Graeme Patterson was fouled in the box and Scott Reid was given the chance to score from the penalty spot but unfortunately he sent his effort high and wide of goal.
At the start of the second half the game remained even and Ardeer thought they received a lucky break on the hour mark when the Darvel goalkeeper picked up a knock and was replaced by former Ardeer keeper Scott Henderson. A Paddy O'Keefe free-kick was parried away by Henderson and Del Gemmell shot wide from close range but that was as close as Ardeer came to troubling the big keeper.
For the rest of the game Darvel dominated, scoring three goals in quick succession in the 62nd, 67th and 69th minute. The third goal was set-up by a perfect long-range defence splitting pass but some people thought that the recipient was offside. Derek Gemmell received a second booking shortly afterwards which effectively ended the game as a contest. Darvel scored a 4th on the 82nd minute on the counter attack after Mark McCann was dispossessed in defence. The Ardeer players were noticeably deflated and Dravel scored their fifth and final goal with two minutes remaining.
The Darvel manager remarked after the match that it was a "game of two halves" which is an accurate assessment of a game that could have perhaps ended differently if Ardeer had went 1-0 up in the first half. The match proved to be Peter Keans final game in charge, as he resigned from the managers post later in the day. |
