Ardeer Thistle 4 Muirkirk 3
Muirkirk came back from a goal down three times in a good match that was well won by Ardeer. With half time approaching both teams had only one clear cut chance. Dougie Ellis failed to finish when one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and Muirkirk failed to take advantage of a defensive error by Toni Paton. It looked as if it was going to be 0-0 at half time, but with 44 minutes gone, Darren Quinn picked out Scott Reid on the left wing, who ran forward with the ball and scored. One minute later Dougie Ellis had a great chance to make it 2-0, but his effort was well saved.
Early in the second half, Muirkirk capitalised on some lackadaisical defending to equalise. Parity was short-lived for them as Martin O'Keefe scored with a sublime free-kick in the 57th minute that hit the post on its way in. Muirkirk equalised again, when Davie Richardson tried to punch the ball clear under pressure and missed it completely. Just two minutes later, Ardeer restored their lead with a close range flying half-volley from Darren Quinn.
Ardeer's position was then jeopardised by the sending off of captain Toni Paton in the 72nd minute as he lashed out at a Muirkirk striker when the ball was out of play. The Muirkirk number 15 was perhaps lucky to avoid punishment as he apparently aimed a "kung-fu kick" at Paton in the same incident. Muirkirk then equalised five minutes later with a free-kick which sailed over the wall and past Davie Richardson. However, Ardeer got the last laugh in the 88th minute when Darren Quinn scored a sensational second goal. He made a good run towards goal with the ball, and sent an audacious lob over the advancing goalkeeper to seal the victory.
Muirkirk hit the post with a free-kick with just about the last touch of the ball before full-time. |
