Darvel 5 Ardeer Thistle 1
Ardeer did well in the first half but the match ended in defeat for them after they were outplayed by Darvel in the second half. The first real chance fell to Brett McKenzie when he got a touch on a Lee Munro effort that was heading wide but he could only send it over the bar. Both teams were playing well but the home side took the lead on the 14th minute. Craig Stirling attempted to pass the ball out of defence but lost possession allowing a Darvel striker to prod the ball home. Ardeer equalised just after the half hour when a throw in was headed on by Jay Docherty into the path of Brett McKenzie who blasted the ball off the bar and into the net. Unfortunately, Ardeer then lost concentration and conceded again only a minute later. There were no more goals prior to half-time but Toni Paton's free-kick and Brett McKenzie's overhead kick were just off target and Darvel hit a long range effort just over the bar.
Darvel scored their third a few minutes into the second half with a real "route one" goal. Their goalkeeper sent a long punt over the away defence which was then finished over Joe Murphy in the Ardeer goal. They made it 4-1 on the hour mark with a neat chipped finish but there was almost certainly an offside player involved in the build-up. However, the referee ignored the protests from the Ardeer players and management and the goal was given. Ardeer kept trying but Darvel scored their fifth and final goal with a couple of minutes remaining in regulation time. Ardeer failed to properly clear the ball and a Darvel player hit a fine effort from just outside the box into the corner of the net, giving Joe Murphy no chance of saving it. |
